Het lijkt alsof Händel in zijn oratoria door het ontbreken van toneelmiddelen zichzelf ertoe zette om in zijn muziek karakterologisch nog intenser en kleurrijker te werk te gaan. Zijn Theodora is een meesterwerk: het verhaal van de christenvrouw Theodora en haar Romeinse geliefde Didymus die het slachtoffer worden van Romeinse onverdraagzaamheid was Händels favoriete oratorium onder zijn eigen werken, en met reden. In deze nieuwe opname, van een reeks succesvolle concerten, zet orkest Il Pomo d’Oro onder leiding van Maxim Emelyanychev direct de sfeer neer van een evenement waar je als luisteraar bij wilt zijn. In het steeds tragischer wordende verhaal worden onnodige zwaarte en een slepende oratoriumtoon vermeden: koor en orkest zetten de vijandige Romeinen eerder als luchthartige losbollen neer, terwijl het bloedmooie ‘As with rosy steps the morn’ van Theodora’s vriendin Irene (hier: een tedere Joyce DiDonato) een bijna fluisterzachte en intieme intensiteit krijgt. Sopraan Lisette Oropesa is hartstochtelijk en kwetsbaar in de titelrol en countertenor Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian toont substantie en betrokkenheid bij de tekst in de rol van Didymus. Tenor Michael Spyres en bas John Chest completeren een prachtige cast, die met de overige uitvoerenden zorgt voor dramatische kracht die nooit ten koste gaat van de muzikaliteit.
