Niemand weet z'n lot vooruit, maar soms lijk je al met iets toekomstigs rekening te hebben gehouden. Een klap was voor de legendarische celliste Jacqueline du Pré de multiple sclerose die haar carrière brak toen ze nog geen 30 was. Bijna of ze het wist, was ze als musicus ongelooflijk snel opgebloeid. Op haar twintigste maakte ze haar beroemdste opname, het Celloconcert van Elgar. Het staat natuurlijk op deze compilatie, met de ronkende titel ‘The very best of’. Nog altijd iets ongelooflijks, die opname. Zo kleurrijk is haar spel, gedragen, romantisch en tot in de kortstondigste pizzicati geladen als de atmosfeer kort voor een onweersbui. Als een ware explosie van jeugd speelt ze Haydns Celloconcert in C. De finale stormt vol risico’s op het slot af, dat ze iets te laag intoneert. Het ontroert, en onderstreept: hier speelt behalve een buitengewoon musicus een buitengewoon mens. Het recitalrepertoire laat horen dat zelfs wonderkind Du Pré er niet in één keer was: Kol Nidrei, dat ze als 17-jarige opnam, klinkt prima maar zes jaar later is bijvoorbeeld Schumanns eerste Fantasiestück van een heel ander kaliber: alsof ze zojuist de zwaarmoedige componist in levenden lijve ontmoette en maar met moeite weer in onze tijd terugkeert.
