Hemelse perfectie
Stelt u zich de immense kathedraal van Florence voor, de Duomo, en bedenk dan wat voor indruk dit gewijde gebouw met de enorme koepel, destijds een huzarenstukje, op de vijftiende-eeuwse inwoners van de stad moet hebben gemaakt. Vooral de akoestiek van de kerk was zo overweldigend dat geloven in God eigenlijk geen keuze meer was. Met zijn voor de inwijding van de kerk geschreven Nuper rosarum flores wist de Franco-Vlaamse componist Guillaume Dufay zich in 1436 onsterfelijk te maken en menig luisteraar tot tranen te roeren. The Splendour of Florence with a Burgundian Resonance is de intrigerende titel van de cd van Gothic Voices die deze wereld tot klinken brengt. Nuper rosarum flores klinkt in al zijn pracht en ook de werken van Johannes Ockeghem, Gilles Binchois en Johannes Tinctoris laten horen waarom deze Franco-Vlaamse of bourgondische componisten zo geliefd waren in het Italiaanse centrum van de renaissance.
