Saint-Saëns’ Derde symfonie behoort onmiskenbaar tot het populaire segment van het klassieke repertoire. Maar wie op internet voor de aardigheid eens de honderden top tienen van geliefdste of mooiste symfonieën doorzoekt, komt Saint-Saëns’ compositie niet tegen. Kennelijk is dit werk in de beleving van veel muziekliefhebbers niet helemaal een echte symfonie. Komt het door dat orgel? Beethovens Negende heeft nota bene zangers! Of doordat het maar twee (hoewel stiekem toch vier) delen telt? Sibelius’ Zevende is zelfs eendelig! Wat voor verklaring er ook mag zijn, de Orgelsymfonie is een meesterwerk in het genre. Ook Antonio Pappano lijkt daarvan overtuigd, en deze liveopname eindigt meteen boven aan in mijn eigen lijstje favorieten. Het Poco Allegro zingt etherischer dan ooit. Het discreet geregistreerde orgel klinkt als een natuurlijk verlengstuk van het orkest en is weldadig onkathedralig – mijn recensie-cd bevat geen informatie over de opnamelocatie. De finale is majestueus en triomfantelijk zonder bombastisch te worden en zonder dat het orkest moet zwoegen om het orgel weerwerk te kunnen bieden. Van Le carnaval des animaux, evenals de symfonie uit 1886, maken de musici – Martha Argerich en Pappano voorop – een feestje waar het speelplezier van afspat.
