Er speelt een aantal musicologische overwegingen een rol bij het uitbrengen van deze nieuwe opname van Händels oratorium Samson: de gebruikte versie – een lange – en de manier waarop de koren gezongen worden. Online kan geluisterd worden naar een kleiner bezette versie en op de cd wordt gebruik wordt gemaakt van een groter koor, inclusief jongens. Het belangrijkste is echter dat het Dunedin Consort onder leiding van John Butt, met de hulp van het Tiffin Boys’ Choir, een uitvoering brengt die de luisteraar betrekt bij het zich ontrollende drama. Laat de interpretatie wellicht iets te veel neigen naar het ‘keurige’, dit zorgt er wel voor dat de woorden meestentijds uitstekend te volgen zijn en de noten op zichzelf geheel voldoen om ons het lot van de verslagen, verblinde Samson te laten voelen. Het oratorium is al vaker op cd gezet, soms met spectaculaire solisten. Hier is sprake van een hecht team, dat de samenhang van koren, aria’s en recitatieven nooit uit het oog verliest. Vitali Rozynko kan zich daardoor met weinig middelen profileren als de macho-opschepper Harapha. Joshua Ellicot imponeert als een gebroken, gevoelige Samson, met alt Jess Dandy als een fraaie Micah. Het persoonlijke triomfeert over het monumentale.
