DiDonato, Joyce

Dit is een opname van de wereldpremière in 2015 van een nieuwe opera van Jake Heggie. De plot gaat over de opvoering van een vergeten (en verzonnen) negentiende-eeuwse Italiaanse opera. Heggie trakteert het publiek in deze ‘American Opera’ op een potpourri van muzikale stijlen, en strooit samen met librettist Terence McNally met verwijzingen naar sport en populaire cultuur die voor veel niet-Amerikanen niet meteen begrijpelijk zullen zijn. Het operagenre zelf wordt ook regelmatig op de hak genomen. Misschien dat de parodie er af en toe iets te dik bovenop ligt. Op de liveopname wordt door het publiek veel gelachen om de enscenering, terwijl de thuisluisteraar geen idee heeft wat er gebeurt. Maar er is ook humor die wel overkomt, zoals de virtuoze vocale verminking van het Amerikaanse volkslied door de hyperambitieuze sopraan Tatyana Bakst, met verve en vet Slavisch accent gezongen door Ailyn Pérez. Mezzo Joyce DiDonato, de zangeres rond wie de hele opera gebouwd is, straalt vooral in de stukken uit de gefingeerde Italiaanse opera. Dirigent Patrick Summers leidt een sterke vocale cast, waaronder veteraan Frederica von Stade. Maar een nieuwe klassieker? Dat is Great Scott helaas niet.
