Ouderen herinneren zich misschien nog de film Farinelli over de castraat Carlo Broschi, die onder dat pseudoniem in de achttiende eeuw furore heeft gemaakt in heel Europa. Van de soundtrack zijn destijds meer dan een miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Niet iedereen was zich er toen van bewust dat de zangstem in de film kunstmatig was samengesteld uit de klanken van een sopraan en een countertenor. Dit om het onwerkelijke geluid van een castraat te suggereren wiens stem meer dan drie octaven moet hebben omvat. Ann Hallenberg heeft al die digitale trucs niet nodig om de halsbrekende aria’s te vertolken die voor Farinelli zijn gecomponeerd door uiteenlopende grootheden als Hasse, Händel en Porpora. De liveopnamen zijn meer dan vijf jaar oud, maar liever laat dan nooit bij deze mezzosopraan, die zich met hart en ziel inzet voor de vaak extremistische muziek. Meteen al in Son qual nave van Riccardo Broschi (de broer van Carlo) stuurt zij de luisteraars naar alle hoeken van de huiskamer met duizelingwekkende coloraturen. Maar de cd vertoont ook verstilde pracht, zoals Händels Lascia ch’io pianga. De begeleiding van Christophe Rousset is uit de kunst. Wie allergisch is voor Cecilia Bartoli, vindt hier een mooi alternatief.
