‘Idioot!’ was de weinig zachtzinnige reactie van John Elliot Gardiner toen hij hoorde dat zijn Japanse collega Masaaki Suzuki de in juni 2005 ontdekte strofenaria Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn’ Ihn van Bach integraal op cd zou gaan zetten. Gardiner: ‘Na drie coupletjes weet je het wel.’ Ton Koopman liet het bij vier coupletten en bij de Nederlandse première van het stuk in september in de Utrechtse Dom klonken er zes. Men worstelde duidelijk met deze wat vreemde eend in de bijt van het Bach-oeuvre. Van Suzuki krijgen we dus het hele stuk, met een tijdsduur van achtenveertig minuten en vijftig seconden. Twaalf keer dezelfde muziek maar steeds met een andere tekst, stralend gezongen door de sopraan Carolyn Sampson. Na het beluisteren van deze cd klinken de ‘nieuwe’ Bachnoten al vertrouwder dan menige wat minder bekende cantate. Hoe Bach dit werk zelf uitvoerde weten we niet, misschien zette hij niet alle twaalf strofen achterelkaar, maar het is in deze uitvoering zeer beslist niet te veel. Suzuki bezet iedere strofe met een andere continuo en na iedere strofe klinkt het verrukkelijke strijkerstussenspel. De cd opent met de virtuoze cantate ‘Jauchtzet Gott in allen Landen’, eveneens magistraal gezongen door Carolyn Sampson.
