Brazilian Adventures: missen met peper
Het is de laatste jaren wel vaker langsgekomen: barokke en klassieke muziek uit Latijns-Amerikaanse landen waarbij de westerse muzikale normen, waarden en regels de Zuid-Amerikaanse spirit ontmoeten. Logisch, de westerse missionarissen zwermden met de ontdekkingsreizigers uit over de hele wereld om zieltjes te winnen. Dat ging doorgaans het eenvoudigst met muziek. En gelukkig voor ons mengde die westerse muziek zich met inlandse gebruiken en klanken. Wie bij de late westerse religieuze barok- en klassieke muziek verveeld met de vingers op tafel trommelt, vindt op Brazilian Adventures de zo gewenste peper. Ex Cathedra speelt en zingt onder leiding van Jeffrey Skidmore laatzeventiende-eeuwse tot vroegnegentiende-eeuwse religieuze muziek uit Brazilië, en een waarschuwing is op zijn plaats. Luister alleen al naar het begin van Missa Pastoril para a noite de natal: alsof Mozart de salsa danst in de vers beschilderde Sixtijnse Kapel. Muziek die even wonderschoon als aanstekelijk is.
